Let’s make play dough at home!

Let’s make play dough at home! It’s cheap, easy and much better than shop bought. Play dough is great for children to develop their fine motor skills, lots of squishing, squeezing, rolling and pinching! It’s also good for developing language – talk about the shapes you are making, how the play dough feels, name the cutter shapes you might be using. Chat while you play.

If you’ve never made play dough before here’s a few photos to show the different stages –

Just a few notes

Choose your food colouring wisely – some colours just aren’t as nice once mixed in to the dough

Add a scent if you like

Olive oil will make the dough sticky and unusable – save your money and use a cheap vegetable oil

Use cheap flour

If you prefer you can cook the dough in a large pan over a low heat, stirring all the time.

Playdough Recipe

Playdough recipe to make in the microwave. Don’t be tempted to leave out the cream of tartar, you need it to stop the dough going off.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups plain flour
  • 2 Cups water
  • 1 Cup salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar
  • 2 Tablespoons oil (not nut oil or olive oil)
  • Food colouring
Playdough ingredients

Playdough recipe method

  1. Put all the dry ingredients in a large microwavable bowl
  2. Add oil
  3. Add your food colouring to the cold water and mix till dissolved
  4. Add the now coloured water to the mix and stir well
  5. Microwave on high in two minute bursts – stir well after each two minutes.

Your playdough is ready when everything has come together to form a dough. Watch it closely as you cook it in the microwave and reduce the two minutes to one if necessary. Once out of the microwave kneed it for a minute or two – be careful as it will be hot!

Once cool wrap in cling film or put in a plastic container and store in a cool place.
