Valentine Collage

Valentine collage to make using coloured tissue paper.

Tissue paper is a wonderful paper that can be torn, layered, crumpled and glued. It comes in a whole variety of colours and is relatively inexpensive. I use it a lot in crafts with children.

This Valentine themed tissue paper collage is very simple to prepare and make. The added hearts are a nice touch but if you don’t have a paper punch to make heart shapes stickers would be great.

All you need to make the valentine collage

A4 or A3 sugar paper
Glue sticks
Hearts cut from paper (and/or heart stickers)
Tissue paper torn into shapes – I used pink, red and yellow in large squares and some green in smaller shapes

Young children can be given the torn tissue paper shapes. Older children could select the colours they wish to use and tear the paper themselves. Tissue paper tears easily but usually there is a direction in the paper that tears in a straightish line – so experiment and see how the older children get on. If they are having trouble tearing the paper easily suggest that they turn the paper 90 degrees and try again.

Valentine’s Day Bible verse craft that is lovely to make and easy to prepare ahead. To make this you need a few bought items and some card. Psalm 136:26 reminds us that God’s love never ends.

Heart shape printed out onto card. Older children can cut it out. You’ll need to cut the shape out for young children (toddler group age)
Heart stickers (if bought on a roll you can cut them into small strips)
Crayons/pencils

Cut out
Colour (I used crayons – pinks, yellows, reds)
Add heart stickers to the border

You could add a ribbon so this craft becomes a wall hanging! Either use a hole punch to make a hole at the top centre and thread a thin ribbon through (Yarn would work too) or tape a loop of ribbon to the back of the heart. If you want to make wall hangings I would suggest you print the heart shape on card so it holds it’s shape. You could laminate it too.

If making in your church group see if older children can find the verse in the Bible and have a go at learning it.

Hearts for Valentine’s Day

Hearts for Valentine’s Day! Valentines day is almost here. These crafts can be used for Valentine’s Day or at any time.

To make life easier I have a heart shaped paper punch like this one from hobbycraft that makes quick work of cutting out hearts. When it gets blunt I use kitchen foil to sharpen it (just cut out a few foil hearts).They are also available from Amazon. You can also cut out heart shapes and also buy heart shapes.

When making crafts with hearts I like to use a broad colour palette, not just pinks and reds. Patterned paper and shiny paper are also great to use.

You can make wreaths from pre-cut cardboard heart shapes. These are available in craft shops and from Amazon. Valentine cards are good if you want the children to have a card to give; I buy blank cards with envelopes. If you had rather not buy blank cards then just fold A4 card in half.

Heart paper punches in different sizes – or templates to cut by hand
Glue
Card blanks and envelopes or card folded to A5 size
Heart shapes – large so they can be decorated
Patterned paper
Coloured paper
Shiny paper
Heart shaped stickers

It’s fine to make a craft yourself beforehand to give children an idea of what you did but then let them make it their own.

Older children might like to use the paper punches themselves. Show them how to use them safely and make sure they cut one sheet of paper at a time.

Hearts for Valentine’s Day ideas

Here’s link to a craft that reminds us about God’s love. This would be great for older children as there are two pdf’s to print and then they can cut out the wreath shape, hearts and ribbon.

If you are making this with older children have a go at helping them to learn the bible verse as they make the craft by repeating the words together a few times.

Valentine craft to make!

A home made Valentine craft that is easy to make. The heart shapes become flower petals. You can buy heart shaped paper punchers/cutters which make the preparation of this craft quick and easy. You could buy heart shaped stickers to add to the choice of hearts too.

All you need for this valentine craft

Card blanks (I often buy card blanks as they usually come with envelopes, but you can fold A4 card in half instead)
Heart shapes – I’ve used shiny paper in bright colours
A pot or vase shape cut out of paper
A green piece of card cut in strips for the flower stem
Smaller hearts to decorate the pot
Glue

When you prep all the heart shapes think about the colours you want the children to be able to choose from. My personal preference is for bright colours – not just pinks and reds but some blue and yellow. You might like more pastel shades. I think it’s good to give children a choice of colours. If they choose all pink or all blue then that’s fine but choice is good.

Valentine’s Day Activity

It is winter where I live but there are still leaves to be found and a few conkers, acorns and winter flowers. These were collected from my garden and arranged into a heart shape.

If you like, you can draw a heart outline and then arrange any leaves, twigs or flowers that you find.

If it’s too snowy (or just too cold!) to find objects outdoors look in your home. I’ve used cotton and fruit! You might like to use toys, building blocks, crayons – anything you like. Your heart shape can be really small or huge. It’s up to you. You can choose random objects or select items of one colour .. lots of variations. Take a photo before you put everything away.
