Hearts for Valentine’s Day

Hearts for Valentine’s Day! Valentines day is almost here. These crafts can be used for Valentine’s Day or at any time.

To make life easier I have a heart shaped paper punch like this one from hobbycraft that makes quick work of cutting out hearts. When it gets blunt I use kitchen foil to sharpen it (just cut out a few foil hearts). They are also available from Amazon. You can also cut out heart shapes and also buy heart shapes.

When making crafts with hearts I like to use a broad colour palette, not just pinks and reds. Patterned paper and shiny paper are also great to use.

You can make wreaths from pre-cut cardboard heart shapes. These are available in craft shops and from Amazon. Valentine cards are good if you want the children to have a card to give; I buy blank cards with envelopes. If you had rather not buy blank cards then just fold A4 card in half.

Craft supplies for Valentine hearts – pick and mix

  • Heart paper punches in different sizes – or templates to cut by hand
  • Glue
  • Card blanks and envelopes or card folded to A5 size
  • Heart shapes – large so they can be decorated
  • Patterned paper
  • Coloured paper
  • Shiny paper
  • Heart shaped stickers

It’s fine to make a craft yourself beforehand to give children an idea of what you did but then let them make it their own.

Older children might like to use the paper punches themselves. Show them how to use them safely and make sure they cut one sheet of paper at a time.

Hearts for Valentine’s Day ideas

Here’s link to a craft that reminds us about God’s love. This would be great for older children as there are two pdf’s to print and then they can cut out the wreath shape, hearts and ribbon.

If you are making this with older children have a go at helping them to learn the bible verse as they make the craft by repeating the words together a few times.

hearts for valentines day

This year we will actually have our Thursday toddler group on February 14th. Valentines Day is often in half term but not this year! So a special ‘keepsake craft’ is in order. Something special for parents and toddlers to make together, write the date on the back and keep.

Baker Ross sell card hearts that are perfect for making a heart wreath. The heart shapes are cut using paper punches – two different sizes. There will be wool and sequins too. The cut out hearts will be colour coordinated – lots of pinks, some green, patterns and bright yellow. The yellow brings the whole thing to life.

Valentine day craft.

To make:

Print a circle on to card for each child. Either cut them out for the children or let older children do that for themselves.

Print red and white hearts and again either cut them out for the children or let them do that themselves. They could add the names of family members to the hearts.

The ribbon can either be the verse from 1 John or blank for the child’s name. The children could colour this.

Let the children arrange the ribbon and hearts as they wish and then they can stick them down with glue.

I’ve included Pdf files of the templates.
