Earlier this week I saw a comment on Facebook that made me get a bit more organised than usual. It may be September but my advent calendar is all planned. I made a material advent calendar that has little pockets a long time ago. I laboriously wrote a Bible verse for each day and then over the years lost track of most of the verses. So when I saw the ad for ‘Advent pocket Cards’ produced by God Venture I made a purchase.
They arrived today and are just right! 25 small cards with part of the Christmas story written on them. Just enough text for children to read before breakfast! There are ideas about how to use them – I’m not going to tell you what they are – you will have to buy your own set 🙂 They are good ideas that would work well.
We will be using them in our family advent calendar but I think they could come in useful in Sunday School activities too.
Take a look at the website. Edit 2019 – They aren’t available year round but should be in the shop near to Advent.
(I bought these cards – God Venture haven’t asked me to review the cards)
Isaiah 60:1-3 ‘Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.’

Luke 2: 3,4 ‘And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.’

Luke 1:35 ‘ And the angel answered her (Mary), ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most high will overshadow you, therefore the child to be born will be called holy – the Son of God.’
A craft to make – snowman bookmark – very simple to make!
All you need is card, felt pens, scissors, pencil.
Draw a snowman and add a scarf – you will cut into the scarf to create a flap to hang over the page in the book. This is shown clearly in the third photo.
Two candles – the second week of advent..
Luke 1:26,27 ‘In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth’
Christmas biscuits to bake –
This is a very easy recipe called 1-2-3 biscuits from ‘Cakes and Cake Decorating’ by Rosemary Wadey.
1oz/25g caster sugar
3oz/75g plain flour
Cream butter and sugar together and then gradually add the flour. Knead till smooth. I made this in my mixer but it is easily done by hand.
Chill the biscuit dough for at least an hour. If you miss this it will be very difficult to roll out and cut into biscuit shapes.
Once chilled roll out on a floured surface. Cut into shapes. I used a christmas tree shaped cutter. Bake at 150C /300F /Gas 2 for about 25 minutes (less if you have a fan oven. Check often anyway). They should be lightly browned. I have a gas oven that has a mind of it’s own so please don’t take my timings as exact!
Once cooked allow to cool and then decorate using icing (icing sugar and water mixed- add water little by little). I added green colouring jell. Decorate any way you like. Eat!
While you bake here is something to listen to.
If you have any icing left you could ice some fairy cakes or cup cakes.
Micah 5:2 ‘But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.’
