On the way to Easter…paper plate pictures

Next half term at Thursday toddler group we will be travelling along the road to Easter. In the Gospels Jesus meets several people when he is on this last journey to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover for the final time. So four of our stories will be about these people that met Jesus as he was going to Jerusalem. Then we will have the story of the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem and in the final week the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

I’ll be using different props for each story but as we go there will be a paper plate picture for each week that will build a bigger picture..

Our stories will be

  • The Rich Young Ruler (Luke 18:18-23 and Mark 10:17-22)
  • Bartimaeus (Luke 18:35-43 and Mark 10:32,33,46-52)
  • Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10)
  • Mary anoints Jesus (John 12:1-8)
  • The Triumphal Entry (Luke 19:28-40)
  • Death and Resurrection of Jesus (Luke 23:44-24:12)

This is how our big picture will look when we have told all the stories..

These are paper plates covered in tissue paper with people and buildings and trees etc added.

The people are available to download – if you would like to make a contribution to the blog you are very welcome to do so but of course you don’t have to!

The pictures of trees and buildings are available in this post https://lettheirlightshine.com/2015/03/20/jesus-enters-jerusalem-palm-sunday/

Jesus is born craft

All you need for this craft – paper party bags, shredded tissue paper, stars, baby picture, glue, crayons or material for the swaddling cloths.

There is a lot of cutting out to do beforehand and not loads for children to do – they decorate the baby, add the tissue paper and the star – so you may want to make a paper plate Mary, Joseph or a shepherd as well!

Noah in the Ark – a weather themed story

IMG_4567

There is a page of mini arks all ready for downloading and printing here Basic Noah’s Ark (x 8)

We did this craft a couple of weeks ago when we were doing Bible Stories on the theme of weather.

We used tissue paper, crepe paper, cellophane wrap, cotton wool and paper clouds.

Praying for toddler groups

A few weeks ago the children’s talk in church was about prayer. The question was ‘What is prayer?’ The answer came from Psalm 62:8, ‘Pour out your heart to him’.

This seemed to me to be such a simple and straightforward way to think about talking to God. We simply pour our heart out to him. The person who does this in the Bible is Hannah as she prays for a child.

It made me think – ‘what are the things on my heart when it comes to the toddler groups that I either lead or help at each week?’ Sometimes there have been specific health concerns of parents, sometimes we’ve struggled with either too few people coming or too many. Sometimes there haven’t been enough helpers. Sometimes I have felt really nervous about leading the singing.

This June we have (in the UK) a month of prayer for Toddler Groups so I decided to make a visual aid for myself. You are very welcome to download the two ideas. My aim is to pray each day for the things that are on my heart.

Jonah and the Whale (big fish) – animal stories

Week three of Bible animal stories was Jonah.

Craft Idea –

img_3761img_3762 (1)

Can you spot Jonah? He is hidden away inside the big fish!

Here is a PDF of the fish  whale (1)

Jonah was made from cutting up concertina people bought from Amazon.

The sea is crepe paper strips and cellophane strips. You have to be careful with the cellophane – if you think children might put it in their mouths then don’t use it. I was stationed at the craft table all morning as we had extra helpers.

We last did Jonah at toddler group in 2015 (where does the time go!) Here’s a link to the story and our huge big fish!

dinosaur craft

There are lots of versions of this in my house (!) – this is my favourite

IMG_2488

How to make – paper plates cut in half. You can easily cut the dinosaur spikes/plates a few plates at a time. Older children who can safely use scissors can do this part themselves. IMG_2485

Each dinosaur needs a tail and a head – there is a free printable here – Dinosaur Head and Tail (1) Colour these and then attach with glue.

Decorate the dinosaur with tissue paper, crayon, pens – whatever suits you. I like to give children a choice.

Decorate the pegs and attach. The dinosaur should stand up!

God made water – and a giveaway!

This term we’ll be using Scripture Union’s Tiddlywinks ‘The Big Green Book’ each week at toddlers.IMG_1013

We will adapt the different ideas each week to suit our group. We are starting with ‘God’s Wonderful World’. It’s all about water. So here’s my craft idea – with a PDF for you and my collection of wet weather gear that I’m planning on dressing up in.

5 loaves and 2 fish craft

img_0789To make this easy craft all you need is

  • Construction paper or light card
  • loaves and fish – printed on paper and cut out. I cut all the loaves as a group which saved a lot of time. Children who are able/old enough to use scissors could cut out their own. Here is a PDF file of the loaves and fish.5-loaves-and-2-fish-2
  • orange/yellow tissue paper in small squares
  • crayons
  • PVA glue and glue sticks
  • sequins (I love using sequins!)
  • paper plates cut in half
  • a sticky label that explains what Jesus did with the loaves and fish

preparation – attach half a paper plate to the construction paper/card beforehand. I used a stapler.

Springwatch inspired song!

A new song to a well known tune – always a safe combination. The tune is ‘the wheels on the bus’.

The song is about these guys. As you can see, I’ve been watching Springwatch.

Jesus enters Jerusalem – Palm sunday

SAM_0124 SAM_0128 SAM_0130

To make these pictures I started with a roll of paper from Ikea and drew a road. The buildings and trees were added. As you tell the story you can add all the things you need. The cloaks were cut from material, the donkey has pegs for legs.

The people were copied from this book Their God is so Big by Stephanie Carmichael. It’s on offer at the moment!
