Something to make  – mince pies!

To make the pastry – (if doing this with young children warn them that the pastry needs to go in the fridge for a bit. My children found it easier to cope with the wait if they knew it was going to happen)

  • 8oz plain flour (add a pinch of salt)
  • 2oz lard
  • 2oz marg/butter
  • cold water
  • extra flour for rolling out
  • shallow bun tin
  • round cookie cutters

Measure out the flour and add the salt. Add the lard and marg and rub in to the flour with fingertips till it looks like breadcrumbs. Children can do this  –  just try to make sure their hands don’t get too warm – pastry loves cold hands!

Then add just enough cold water to make a dough. Add a little at a time. I mix this in with a knife (like the one you use with a fork  – no sharp edges!) . Then chill the dough for about half an hour wrapped in cling film.

Roll out  12 larger circles to fit in the bun tin and 12 tops. These need to be smaller and can be different shapes.

Grease the bun tin. Put in the bottoms and add a spoon of good quality mincemeat. Add the tops. Brush with a little milk. Put a small cut in each lid.

Bake in a hot oven (200c) for about 15 minutes. When baked the mincemeat will be very hot so leave to cool a bit before enjoying.

Make your own advent calendar

Chocolate has taken over advent calendars! So this is a set of printables to make your own set of pictures (that children can decorate every day of advent) with a Bible verse to read each day. In our family  we won’t do this instead of chocolate but alongside the chocolate eating advent calendar.

Use this any way that suits you – we have some Christmas twine and paper clips.

There is an extra picture for Christmas day.

Christmas Paper Plate Ideas

These paper plates were made as an aid to telling the Christmas story but they could easily be adapted to be crafts. I had a lot of fun making them 🙂 They would make a lovely family craft activity to make during advent and then display at Christmas. And if you want a family craft at a church group then there is lots for a child and adult to enjoy.

All you need  – good quality paper plates (these were from waitrose!), wool, tissue paper, material, triangles for the body shapes, heart shapes for the angel wings, shredded tissue paper, cotton wool, cardboard tubes/rolls. And any art/collage supplies you fancy! For glue I used double sided tape for the cardboard tubes and glue sticks.

Something for you..

Christmas is Coming!B - 2015

We are holding an afternoon of Christmas Ideas – you are very welcome to come along.

advent idea!

Earlier this week I saw a comment on Facebook that made me get a bit more organised that usual. It may be September but my advent calendar is all planned. I made a material advent calendar that has little pockets a long time ago. I laboriously wrote a Bible verse for each day and then over the years lost track of most of the verses. So when I saw the ad for ‘Advent pocket Cards’ produced by God Venture I made a purchase.

They arrived today and are just right! 25 small cards with part of the Christmas story written on them. Just enough text for children to read before breakfast!  There are ideas about how to use them – I’m not going to tell you what they are – you will have to buy your own set 🙂 They are good ideas that would work well.

We will be using them in our family advent calendar but I think they could come in useful in Sunday School activities too.

Take a look at the website.
