If you want children and their parents to make something craft based then providing a welcoming and organised craft space is a must. I try to make our craft table at toddlers as inviting as I can – we use a washable PVC cloth to cover the table and craft supplies are in Ikea shallow bowls that are available in lots of different colours. I never fill these with all the materials for the craft but top them up during the morning. This way there is always something for the toddlers at the end of the morning as well as for those who get to the table first. Also, if someone does tip everything out there isn’t so much mess! If you have a child who loves to tip all the craft supplies onto the floor each week then simply don’t have containers – just group the supplies together – tissue paper in one place, stickers in another etc. Finally, avoid items that are chocking hazards or could be dangerous; for me these include scissors, split pins and glue stick lids. If we use google eyes they are on a high ledge where parents and carers can reach them when they are ready to glue them.
